There's a lot to be excited about for the upcoming year in the streaming platforms. This is not an extensive list, just some of the series I'm most looking forward to watching in 2022.
Check it out:
From Netflix
Ozark:
The 4th and last season of Ozark has just hit Netflix. Actually, only part of it. Netflix has released 7 episodes now and will release the last episodes later this year. Ozark has been dubbed the series for former Breaking Bad fans. It's a fun series to watch and Jason Bateman and Laura Linney are great in it.
Inventing Anna:
This is a new series starring one of the main and best actors from Ozark, Julia Garner. It tells the story of a girl pretending to be a german socialite in New York and scamming many in the way. It’s produced by Shonda Rhimes (Grey's Anatomy, Scandal, Bridgerton and much more).
The Crown:
After winning so many awards for its last season, The Crown comes back to its 5th one telling the story of the British monarchy from the 1990s on. In this season we will probably see the divorce from Diana and Charles and Diana's death. Next year, a final 6th season will be aired.
Stranger Things:
Although it has been losing its charm a little, I'll probably watch the upcoming season of Stranger Things. The last season has been released 2 years ago and many are waiting to see what happens next. It will probably be released near summer.
Wednesday:
This new Tim Burton series will follow Wednesday Addams from the Addams Family in a year of her studies. I don't have great expectations for this series, but I find the Addams family really fun. I grew up with its 90's movies and Christina Ricci playing Wednesday, so it will be interesting to see what they make of it.
1899:
This new series from the same creators of Dark will hit Netflix with a lot of anticipation. The German series Dark was a success all around the world being the biggest non-English speaking series before Squid Games. 1899 will tell the story of a group of immigrants to America in an adrift boat.
Sandman:
One of the most famous comic books of all time is going to have its own series this year. Its creator Neil Gaiman is also responsible for the series coming to Netflix later this year. There is still no release date.
From HBO
House of the Dragon:
Maybe one of the most hyped series releases for this year. The Game of Thrones spin-off will probably be released around the period that GoT used to be released (April-June). It's based on another book written by George R.R. Martin, Fire & Blood that tells the story of the Targaryen family.
Euphoria:
Euphoria portrays a depressive and drug-abusing teenager as she navigates these troubling times. It has deservedly won 3 Emmys and is currently with new episodes being released on HBO every Sunday.
From Amazon
The Lord of the Rings:
This series is already the most costly series ever made with $465 million for its 1st season. The series will not tell the same story from the books and Peter Jackson's trilogy. It will be set thousands of years before, with the emergence of a new evil. Amazon is investing a lot in this, hoping to finally hit the pot and have his own Game of Thrones-like success series.
From Disney/ Star
Atlanta:
Maybe the series from this list that I'm looking forward the most. Atlanta has been on hiatus since 2018. It's created and stars Donald Glover, which in my opinion can't do anything wrong. He can act, he can sing, he can produce. This series is so smart and funny, I just love it. It will be available on Star which you can also access on Disney+.
From Disney, you can also expect many new Star Wars and Marvel series and movies. I'm not particularly excited about any of them, but will probably watch the new series of Obi-Wan-Kenobi, which will star Ewan McGregor.
What to watch?
The movie that turned Tim Burton in a kind of a brand and seem to be the eternal source of his style, Nightmare before Christmas. It brings to imagination how Christmas and Halloween could be joined. It tells the story of Jack Skellington, the King of "Halloween Town" who stumbles upon "Christmas Town" and becomes obsessed with celebrating the holiday.
What to read?
If you want to get hyped about the new Lord of the Rings series, what about reading the Hobbit? The Hobbit or There and Back again is a much simpler and smaller read than the Lord of the Rings. It tells the story of Bilbo Baggins in a mission to retrieve the dwarves’ treasure from the dragon Smaug and how he finds the One Ring.
What to Binge?
Atlanta. Available on Star or Disney+ Atlanta is short and worthwhile. It has 21 episodes released. The next season is coming on March 24 2022, and a fourth season is already confirm for 2023.
Atlanta tells the story of Earn and his cousin Alfred trying to make their way in the world through the rap scene. Along the way they come face to face with social and economic issues touching on race, relationships, poverty, status, and parenthood.
