It is amazing to go back and rewatch shows and movies you have seen before. A few weeks ago I watched the first episode of Buffy again and it was just as good as the first time I watched it!
I love this argument. I recently started rewatching New Girl and had the kind of self-reflexive experience you described. The last time I saw the series was as a teenager when it was airing live. It's crazy to see my growth through my reactions to the series but also realize I'm just as invested in Nick and Jess's first kiss as I was when I was 13.
Yeah, I agree, in most cases sequels and spin-offs don’t compare with the original, perhaps the way film versions of novels often don’t. However, I confess to enjoying the Lost in Austen mini-series from some years ago:
Technically, I suppose, Buffy is a remake since there was a film version in the early 90s.
During the pandemic, I started watching Buffy again. I really like the first episodes, when the scope of the story is small and the actors are still finding the characters that will become so memorable. Later the series became more ambitious and the scope larger, with everyone practically superpowered.
I don’t recall how far I got. I think I skipped ahead at some point and watched some of the classic episodes, like “Once More, with Feeling” and “Hush.”

I’m also in defense of re-reading! Which I’d never do before. I’ll definitely be re-reading this year. ✨
Buffy! Watched it with my older sister every week. Good time.

Rewatching took me by surprise just how thoughtful Buffy was. I always thought it would be a pretty silly teenager thing, with vampires and monsters.
I wrote about re-watching New Girl here as well. It’s super fun and worth it. :)
